Mandating an end to personal irresponsibility

Sometime soon the Supreme Court will rule on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, in particular its mandate that individuals must purchase health insurance. Conservatives strongly and loudly have opposed the mandate as a dangerous expansion of federal power. What gets lost in the noise is the fact that conservatives came up with the idea in the first place. Yes, the health care mandate approach originated with conservative scholars at several prominent conservative think tanks.
